Obama for Mbale Mayor

Ugandans love Barack Obama. I haven’t got much insightful analysis beyond that. I just wanted to share the flyer pictured above, which was hanging in one of Mbale’s internet cafes. I’m not sure if Obama is running for Mbale mayor, or if he’s endorsing someone named Robol. Either way, it’s great to see him get involved in local politics. I’ve also spotted signs for Obama Party Planners and Obama Hair Designers.

The best is when strangers bring him up in conversations. The following interaction, which took place on the street outside Kampala’s bus park, is typical:

Random guy approaching me: Hello, my friend! How are you?

Me: I’m great! How are you?

RGAM: I’m very fine, thank you. Where are you from?

Me: I’m from the United States.

RGAM: Ah, Barack Obama!

Me: Yes, that’s the name of our president, but I’m not him. I will tell him you said hi.

  1. Very considerate of you to pass those wishes along to the POTUS.

Ah, but do they have Obama biscuits?! We found lovely Obama treats in Accra.
